    I have four years experience coaching organized basketball.

    Personal Fact:
    Have four boys and two play in the Upward program.

    Why I love to coach:
    To relate with children with something they enjoy and teach life lessons through sports.

  • Bob Alvarez: Development Coach & Academy Director

    Favorite Verse:
    The book of Psalms - 23

    Experience:
    Bob played through High School and College in the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, when short shorts were a la mode…YIKES! Since then much has changed but the goal is still 10 feet and the ball is still 29.5”. In over 4 decades Coach Bob has guided teams a different levels while maintaining a successful military career. Championships, winning and loosing seasons were all part of the journey. Throughout the journey he has instructed the game to youth and young men developing their skills and excelling their game, while helping them in attaining their goals.

    Personal Fact:
    Bob Alvarez, Lieutenant Colonel (retired), Founder and Owner of JBAR Enterprises LLC, served in the United States Army for over 21 years. Bob was awarded the Legion of Merit, the highest award attained during peacetime for his successful military service. He holds a Masters Degree in National Security and Strategic Planning. After retirement Mr. Alvarez rose to become the President of Sales and Marketing at North Point Group achieving over $250 million dollars in commercial property development and sales. Presently he owns and operates a renewable energy company: JBAR Enterprises LLC and focuses on delivering renewable energy solutions. Bob is married to his lovely wife Madeline is the loving father of 3 children and has 3 grandchildren. A twenty year resident of Fayette county for almost twenty years and an active member of NHBC. He’s always up for a great game of golf!

    Why I love to coach:
    Coaching the game of basketball is a true blessing for me my family, and the families I am privileged to serve through a season. I love to use the game as an instructional guide to life; you must learn face adversity, open your heart and love all people of all walks as Jesus did, be a good disciple; disciplined and working towards goals that will allow you to succeed in life. Its my way to help parents and the community with shaping our youth and seeing them become successful citizens… Never forget: you can make it to Harvard much easier than getting to the NBA!

  • Adrian Cooley: 9th Grade Girl's Coach

    Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me"

    Experience:
    I have been the head coach of the girls team for the past two years. Before that I was an assistant coach for two years with the boys team.

    Personal Fact:
    Me and my wife Charnise have been married 14 years. We have three children Chayla, Ava, and A'lyah. All three of them have participated in Upward Sports. We moved from Chicago to the Atlanta area five years ago.

    Why I love to coach:
    Coaching gives me a chance to serve in a ministry while enjoying my favorite sport. I enjoy seeing the growth in players. I love seeing them learning how the Bible helps us deal with on the court lessons and off the court lessons.

  • Joel Gibson: Club Director

    Sport: Basketball

    Favorite Verse:
    "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

    Experience:
    Joel played through high school at Brooklane Baptist Academy in Birmingham, AL. He recieved All-State honors his Junior and Senior year. After his active military service, Joel returned to his Alma Mater to coach basketball and baseball while he completing a degree in Theology from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. A couple of Joel's coaching accolades consist of three straight ACAA state title appearances, and an overall record of 60 wins and 13 losses over three seasons.

    Personal Fact:
    Joel is a husband and father of one. He is the new Director of Sports & Recreation at New Hope Baptist Church.

    Why I love to coach:
    I believe most life lessons are realized through athletic competition. I feel like the basketball court has always been my most effective teaching platform. I love helping young men reach their potential by first making them fall in love with this wonderful game, next by pushing them to limits they thought they never could meet, and then (most importantly) shepherding their hearts by directing them to Christ who is the Source of true joy and purpose.
